[True to his word, Yu is hanging out at Talon a couple hours later, examining the practice swords while he waits.]

Hey. Sorry I'm late.
[ Minato lifts a hand in greeting as he steps beside Yu. The wall is lined with practice swords of all different types, lengths, and weights. There's... actually a ton of options. Whoa.
He glances at each one, gaze roving from one side of the display to the other, all before landing on one of the one-handed practice swords. Minato pulls it off the shelf and takes it into his hands, carefully assessing its weight. ]
I've never used an actual practice sword before...
[ Like. SEES just handed him a real sword right off the bat. ]

[It can be a difficult place to navigate -- he gets that. For now, Yu decides on the weapon he last took a look at: a two-handed sword, familiar in his hands. His eyebrows lift at those words.]
Really? You just went all-in?
[Not that he doesn't get that -- his team had sort of done the same thing. It's just that he had also done kendo for a few months at a previous school.]

Yeah. My group just... handed me a real sword.
[ And he'd just taken it without any further questions. ]
I was part of the kendo club back at Gekkoukan though. So... I guess those are close enough to these.
[ Albeit, those were differently from the ones on display at Talon. Minato's gaze shifts to Yu's selection: a two-handed sword, one with a longer reach and certainly heavier compared to the one in Minato's hand.
...thinking about it though, it suits Yu. ]

[Between that and what he's heard of the Phantom Thieves...Yu is starting to feel like the IT was a little clueless. Not that he'd have it any other way. He smiles a bit at the mention.] I did kendo for a little while, too. Yasogami didn't have it, though -- so it's been a while.
[Yu takes a moment to check out Minato's choice, as well. So, one-handed versus two-handed? That'll be interesting. There are pluses and drawbacks for each... He tilts his head toward the ring.] Ready?

[ It's said with a small shrug, though there's a small smile on Minato's face. ]
Don't think the Kirijo Group would just let us loose like that.
[ Or at least, not any more than they'd done... Poor Kirijo-senpai, truly, having to herd all those cats.
Minato rests his practice weapon of choice on a shoulder and flashes Yu a thumbs-up. ]
It's fine. I won't judge your form too much.
[ And because he's prepared now, he'll wander over to the ring, assuming Yu will follow close behind. Minato pauses at the center of it and slides into a ready stance. It's just practice, but Yu doesn't seem like the sort to do anything half-heartedly, even something like this. ]

Sounds like they ran a pretty tight ship.
[Which makes sense, for anything that even remotely involves Mitsuru, actually. As much as he likes her, she has a very scary side that would probably be quite a benefit to an organization like that.]
I appreciate it, [he says on the edge of a short laugh, following Minato to the ring. The other wild card is right that he doesn't do things by halves -- there's a look of diligence and concentration on his face as he slips into a starting form. After a pause, to ensure they're both ready, he charges forward with a sweeping vertical slash.]

You're mostly self-taught?
[ Yu said his school didn't have kendo as an extracurricular or a club, and even so, a two-handed sword was pretty different from one of those.
He can't stay on the defensive the whole time. Minato pivots, trying to shift towards Yu's unguarded flank and aims straight and true. ]
You seem like the type who takes learning new things pretty seriously.
[ Is the compliment part of Minato's strategy? Only time will tell... ]

[His whole team had found that to be true; none of them really knew what they were doing at the start. Only through experience and a fair bit of luck had they managed to avoid getting themselves killed.
The difference between strength and speed comes into focus, here, as he manages to block the hit, but only just. The weapons meet with a solid clack! as Yu steadies his feet.]
I guess I do, yeah. [Matter-of-fact, but humble. Then, with a slight edge of a smile:] You seem to take this pretty seriously, too.
[He chooses that moment to push off with his back foot, putting his strength into his sword to push Minato back and away.]

You know how it goes.
[ There's no smile on Minato's face, only the crease in his brow from intense focus. ]
One misstep is all it takes.
[ Yu's using his size to his advantage, letting gravity do some of the work with the heavier sword. Minato's forced to break contact, backing away just so. There's no point in putting too much distance in between them. That'd just hand Yu another one-up, letting him use his sword's greater reach to his advantage.
So he tries again, lunging once more in a diagonal slash in hopes of catching Yu off-balance. ]
You're going to have to take the initiative eventually.
[ Unless Yu was generally a more passive fighter? That's not a bad strategy either, watching and waiting, biding one's time until the opportunity to strike finally surfaces. ]

One misstep. If anything hadn't happened just the way it did...
Tension spikes and focus sharpens at the same time; Yu isn't exactly a more passive fighter, but he likes to observe. To get a feel for an opponent's moves whenever he can, their weaknesses.
His sword comes up again to parry the slash with a strike that he's hoping will knock Minato back -- at least enough that it puts some distance between them. He can't beat the other wild card with speed, and strength only does so much. Minato seems to fight with commitment and urgency. It's not as though Yu feels unhurried, but you can't win every fight in one round.]

[He's waiting for his moment.]

Maybe it'd be different if he could rely on his Personas and capitalize on magic. It was easier to cast spells; that required less movement and minimized physical contact with an opponent. Even with the help of extracurriculars, Minato's never been particularly hale and hearty.
He breaks away from Yu and puts a bit of distance between the two of them. He holds his practice weapon with two hands, gaze hovering on the other wild card. ]
If you wanted to, you could probably finish this with one blow.
[ Minato shakes his head. ]
Those abs I've been hearing about -- now I can tell that they're not just for show.

... Besides. He isn't sure he wants to finish this with one blow. There's something about the fight that makes him feel more collected than he has in the last few days, dampening the emotional frenzy that's been welling up within him ever since he got flung out of the basement.
Those abs I've been hearing about. Somehow the fact that Minato says that so casually is what affects him most, heat flaring in his cheeks briefly before he moves in for another strike.]
Don't count yourself out yet, [he manages a light tone in spite of the remark, charging forward with a diagonal two-handed strike.] Strength isn't everything.

And perhaps it's out of sheer curiosity that Minato finds himself standing his ground, stance shifting in preparation for Yu's blow. His feet pivot at the last minute, blocking most of the double-handed sword's blow.
Even with part of the force diverted, Minato feels the strength behind the strike. It falls heavy between the natural weight of the training weapon, aided by Yu's own physical strength. He's forced backwards a couple of paces but leans into where their weapons interlock, embers of excitement rising in slate-blue eyes. It seems even Minato isn't immune to the thrill of facing against a stronger opponent. ]
It helps though, I'll have to give you that.
[ Which brings them here to this particular standstill, the equivalent of full-body arm wrestling. ]

... Ah. Maybe that's a bit too sentimental.
Crack! the swords connect. The thing Yu notices most is how close they are; close enough to see the color of the other wild card's eyes. Close enough to catch fleeting moments of emotion behind the expression. The thrill of the fight.
Encouraged, maybe emboldened, Yu gives it a moment-- and then bears down with as much strength as he can muster, to push Minato down and pin him for the win. His breath comes in shallow puffs as he steadies himself, but he doesn't yet let go of the weapon.]

...or perhaps not, and the thread connecting each wild card's hearts with one another was stronger than spider silk.
The flame in Minato's irises flickers briefly as Yu harnesses the whole sum of his strength. So this is what he'd wielded in the face of his trials and tribulations, what he'd used to protect others precious to him --
It's a privilege to witness. Minato doesn't mind surrendering to it at all.
Or rather, it seems he doesn't have a choice -- there's an even louder crack, the sound of his practice sword splintering beneath the force of his opponent's strength, throwing Minato off balance and onto his back. But he doesn't seem disappointed at all -- instead, he's... pleased, satisfied to have the opportunity of witnessing Yu this way. ]
