[Why is he nervous?

Yu reasons that it's probably the threat of the connection: memory loss at home, memory loss here. He hasn't thought about his previous-self doppelganger in ages, and now he once again finds himself wondering if he had just forgotten being here instead. But whatever the reason, he wants to know what he might be missing.

Rise's room is only a floor down from his, so it's a quick trip, but it's also a reminder of the change in conditions -- maybe he should have invited her upstairs instead. Too late now; he's already here, and knocks on her door.]

[Why doesn't he remember Kanzeon's transformation? It's bothering her.

She'd spoken with the guy who said he was from Taisho-era Japan, so for a moment she wonders if this is some Past Yu, but no, he'd mentioned leaving Inaba. So what, then, could be the explanation?

Ugh, she hates this.

Rise's room is what a lower-rank might expect. It's small, and not very ornate, and she hasn't decorate dit yet.

But when Yu knocks on the door, she calls out.] It's open!

[She's sitting on the bed. It's clear that she's a little stressed, but she gives Yu a genuine smile. He puts her at ease.] ...hey, senpai. Thanks for coming down here and slumming it. [She says with a little tease in her voice.]

[Ah. Hm. Judging from the look on her face, Yu wonders if maybe he should have explained things beforehand after all. It's true that it's a little worrisome for him -- but he's the leader, he's supposed to worry about things like this. She has enough to deal with already.

Still, he returns the smile pretty easily, huffing out a soft laugh as he sits next to her on the bed.]

I'm only one floor up, you know.

[It's not that bad! Although it's very possible she's used to much better accommodations...in any case, he'd might as well get the explanations out of the way so he doesn't cause her more concern.]

Earlier...you mentioned a ski trip, but I don't have any memory of that. It has me wondering where else our memories might differ.

[Ah. He's next to her.

Which like, it isn't unusual. They hang out all the time. He sits next to her all the time.

Just... not on a bed, and not in a place like this. She tries not to think about things like that, because they have more important issues.]

You really don't remember it at all? We had that weird thing with the TV in the cabin... [Okay. No, let's be strategic about this.]

You were in Inaba, right? And we were all together trying to solve the mystery of the serial killer and the Midnight Channel, right? [This feels so obvious.] Ugh, I don't know how to go over literally everything important we might remember, senpai!

[Where's Naoto. Where's someone who can think.]

[It'll probably strike him, later, how close they are in this moment. And normally, it wouldn't matter much -- she certainly hangs on his arm enough that he's used to it. But the resort makes things feel different in a way he tries not to think about, most of the time, but is still a fact, even if it's not in the front of his mind.]

All of that is right, [he says on a small, thoughtful sigh, because honestly -- this particular mystery is...really difficult to get past.] We found the killer-- the real killer. We fought Izanami the day before I left Inaba...

[... but Rise is right -- the only way to make sure their memories are on the same page is to go through every detail, piece by piece, and that particular task seems pretty daunting, honestly.]

... Even if we could compare every detail, I'm not sure what the outcome would be. Mentioning this ski trip isn't exactly jogging any memories.

Ugh, why can't Naoto-kun be here? She'd figure it all out, I bet.

[She thinks.] And we thought the killer might have been Namatame, but it was Adachi this whole time, right? [She says, watching him to try and gauge his reaction, to see if there's anything she says that's not hitting the mark.]

That stupid goddess really pisses me off... it's not enough for her to try to test humanity with the Midnight Channel, but then there was that whole thing with Marie-chan, too!

[Wait a minute.] Senpai, if you didn't go to the ski trip, how did you save Marie-chan? Do you remember that?

[Rise is right -- Naoto would probably figure it out in no time. Much as he doesn't exactly want any of their group to be here... he does miss them a lot. In any case, he nods, because most of what she's saying lines up pretty neatly with what he remembers.

... Most of it.]

Marie, [he repeats the name incredulously, then shakes his head. His expression is perplexed, maybe a bit curious; most of the concern he feels isn't showing. Because:] ... I don't know anyone with that name.

Huh?! [That audibly and visibly catches Rise off guard. It's one thing to maybe be fuzzy on some details or misremember things. But to not have even heard of that girl.] But... senpai, she was your friend. She didn't come to school or anything, uh. [Hmm. How did they know each other?]

Was there something about a guy with a big nose?

[She thinks she remembers that coming up. What a bizarre thing to remember.

And the conversation goes on. Eventually, Rise flops back on her bed.] My head hurts.

If anyone ever wants to cast me on a TV show about alternate universes I'm going to literally punch them.

[The problem is, Yu came into this conversation looking for answers...but by the end of it, all he has is more questions. Who's Marie? What's with the bass guitar solo thing and the dancing? Does any of this relate to the "other him" that was here before he arrived? There are more, of course, so many more, but just like Rise said -- his head hurts.

He's not going to find the answers to any of those right now, though, and it's not fair to put them on Rise when she's just as confused as he is. With a small, thoughtful sigh, he leans back on his hand.]

I don't blame you, [though he manages a little bit of a smile, in spite of the confusion they're both sharing.] At this point, I think we've both earned a one-universe-only guarantee.

...senpai, this sucks. [Rise says, her voice soft. She sounds tired. She feels tired.

She rolls over onto her side.

Ah. He's really close to her.] It's like, I have all of these memories in Inaba with you, and now I'm not even sure if you have them, too.

[Her cheeks are pink.] But... it's still you, right? And I'm still me. And we're here, in crazy sex casino world.

[A pause.] It must've been hard being by yourself here, huh?

[This sucks is such a versatile and accurate statement, honestly, because there is a lot about the situation that totally sucks. He nods to show his agreement, resting his chin on the palm of his hand -- she's right that there's no telling what other memories differ, too.

But--]

Still me, [he says with a soft hint of a smile, tipping his head a bit.] And you're still you.

[Ah. She's right on the mark again, though. His expression turns thoughtful.] I guess, yeah. I just keep thinking about how I was supposed to visit for Golden Week. [There's a short pause, here, as he works out an addition to those words. There's a faint dusting of pink across his cheeks, too.]

... I can't say I'm glad you're here. But I am really glad to see you again.

You did visit for Golden Week! [She sighs.]

[A beat. She's trying to not think about Yu being here.] Haha, I guess that you've been fantasizing about me while you've been with-- [No, she can't even do that. Her face scrunches up from sheer cringe.] N-nevermind! What a dumb thing to...

[She trails off.] I'm kinda nervous, Senpai. About... you know, all of this.

Like, I'm not ashamed of people looking at me in skimpy clothing or anything. I'm used to that. But that just feels... [Another sigh.] ...different, I guess?

[Ah. There, again, another detail he seems to be missing. The mystery of it tugs at the back of his mind almost completely -- until Rise's next comment derails it entirely. Heat flashes in his face even as he tries to gather his composure enough to quell it, and her last-ditch effort to laugh it off or dismiss it does only the barest minimum to help.]

I understand, [he says, taking a moment before he speaks to steady the wobble in his voice. No one manages to fluster him quite the same way as Rise Kujikawa. It seems to be a particular talent of hers.] ...and you're right. It's different.

[Fanservice and intimacy are worlds apart -- a reminder this place manages to drive home like a sledgehammer. As much as he wishes he could assure her with something real --"it'll ve alright" or "we'll figure this out" or something-- those just sort of seem like empty placations, right now. Instead he goes with a more personal opinion.] ... it's not as bad as it seems. Being stuck feels like the worst part, a lot of the time.

[That much is true for him, at least, but then again, some people think of sex as something much bigger than he's always considered it to be. Not that he loves the implications of the resort, but this aspect isn't the biggest stumbling block, at least for him.]

[Being stuck. Right, they can't leave. Or at least they probably can't leave, they just haven't found the way out.

That's at least how Rise interprets his words, if they're meant more metaphorically.]

Can I ask you something?

Is it weird if... maybe there's a part of me that's... I don't know, a little... excited?

[Rise exhales. She draws her legs up onto the bed with her, curled up nex to him.] I don't even know if that makes sense, or if that's what I'm feeling, to be honest.

But being an idol can be so restricting. If we dated back in Inaba, and it got out that I had a boyfriend, the weirdos would flip out, you know?

Here, it's like... who cares? Everyone's doing it.

[Wait. Rise sits upright, waving her hands in front of her.] N-not that I was going to date you back in Inaba!

I mean, not that... it's not that I didn't... I didn't not want to, but... [Oh jeez she's really messed this one up.]

[Being an idol is tough. Yu never really had any doubts about that, but hearing Rise talk like this...it makes sense. People can be anything, anyone they want in a place like this, where no one knows them. Yu himself has started over in different schools and prefectures...maybe he sort of took that anonymity for granted.

The heat doesn't make it all the way to his face this time, as she stumbles through her explanation, but it certainly lingers in his chest, though whether it's a fire stoked or a twist of nervousness he can't quite tell just yet. But-- it's hard not to notice, right now, the small size of the room and how close they are on the bed, almost knee to knee.]

I-- [get it together, Narukami] ... It's alright. I get what you mean. Going somewhere new like this...you get to choose who you want to be.

[He wouldn't word it like that for anyone but her -- but he says it with a faint tip of smile in his expression, too. The truth is, he had no intention of dating anyone in Inaba. Just knowing it was all temporary -- he didn't want to put anyone through that. He didn't want to put himself through that. Maybe it's a testament to how much Inaba changed him, that he's more ready to form those bonds here. That he's no longer afraid of the hurt.]

... It's not weird. No weirder than anything else around here, at least.

That's a really low bar, senpai.

[Okay. He didn't get mad at her or anything. Phew.

Rise draws her legs up under her, kind of half-kneeling on the bed, supporting herself with one hand.] Though honestly, I'm not sure how much worse it is than the strip club. Ugh, imagine my Shadow being here...

[She makes a face, mimicking her Shadow self's promotional tone.] "Get ready, viewers! See who's the lucky guy who's going to take Risette's virginity! It could be anyone! It could even be you!"
